Information For You About Ashbourne Family Practice

Ashbourne Family Practice is a privately owned GP Practice.
When running a surgery, like any small business, there are various business costs to cover, for example, staff wages, heating, lighting, rates, building insurance, medical insurance, service charges, etc.

If you have a medical card, the HSE give a yearly set payment to the doctor. This payment only covers some medical services which the GP provides to you. However, there are certain things that the medical card does not cover, and for these services there will be a charge.

Some Examples:

  • Driving License Medical/Eyesight forms
  • Medical Report/consultations for legal purposes
  • Certificates for work
  • Passport Forms
  • Use of disposable equipment
  • Letters of residency
  • Letters to support various applications for social welfare
  • Travel Vaccinations
  • Private Phlebotomy
  • Fitness letters (to fly or particpate in certain activities)

Why does it take my GP so long to fill out a form?

Time spent completing forms and preparing reports takes the GP away from the medical care of his/her patients. Most GP's have a very heavy workload and paperwork takes up an increasing amount of their time. Many GP's have to work late or take paperwork home at nights and weekends. Your form may be one of many that the GP needs to complete.

I only need the GP's signature - what is the problem?

GP's can only sign what they know to be true. That's why each document they are asked to sign needs to be carefully checked and may require the patient's entire medical record to be reviewed. In addition, there can also be a delay depending on the level of paperwork the GP has already received to complete.
